Transportation Fees Being Considered in Maryland

December 6th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Having heard strong, nearly unanimous opposition from citizens on a proposed hike in gas taxes, some Maryland officials are thinking about making motorists pay fees according to how many miles they drive. It would help maintain the transportation fund, and perhaps could pay for new highway projects that have been committed.  The mileage-based fee would be among the first in the nation- however it is a long way form coming to fruition and would have to be passed by the General Assembly and apprived by the governor. Motorists would report their odometer readings to the state. State Senator George Edwards said one idea being discussed on one that would place G-P-S monitors on people’s vehicles to check their mileage.
