On December 31st, 2019 officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the intersection of Harrison Street and Mechanic Street for a reported hit and run involving a tractor trailer striking a traffic signal. Officers were able to locate the tractor trailer on Liberty Street and spoke with the operator, Denise Shaffer, about the incident. When questioned about not remaining at the scene of the crash Shaffer had stated that she was following her GPS to return to the interstate. Shaffer was then charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and other traffic related charges. Shaffer was then released pending her trial. The Cumberland Police Department was assisted by Potomac Edison and the Cumberland Street Department with removal of the damaged traffic signal. Stop signs have been temporarily placed to assist in traffic control until repairs can be completed.
