Twigg Provides Crime Update

During his budget presentation to the Allegany County Commissioners last week, States Attorney Michael Twigg provided a brief crime update. Twigg said without question the biggest problem facing law enforcement in Allegany County is the growing drug problem. He described the local area as a haven for drug dealers who want to maximize profits, pointing out that in Baltimore, heroin sells for $80 to $100 a gram. In Allegany County, less than a gram of heroin sells for up to $200. While illegal drugs are on the rise, there was a bit of good news in that the problem of synthetic drug use has all but disappeared. Just a couple of years ago the region was being inundated with synthetic drugs like "bath salts" and "spice."  The drugs, marketed to youths experienced a  20 percent jump in cases from 2011 to 2012 across the nation and had become a growing concern locally.  Twigg says that thanks to the efforts of the C3I Narcotics Task Force and local laws being put on the books, those drugs are no longer a major concern…
