On Monday, March 25th, 2019 the Cumberland Police Department responded to 80 Greene Street for a breaking and complaint. When officers arrived, they spoke with the complainant who stated that Benjamin James Covalt broke into an upstairs apartment through a window. Officers made entry into the residence and observed Covalt fleeing down the fire escape. Officers gave chase and he was apprehended a short time later. Covalt also had an outstanding warrant for violation of probation. He was served the warrant and charged with burglary 1st, 3rd, 4th, assault, and disorderly conduct. He was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond.
Also charged in the incident was Demond Arthur Scott. Scott was inside of the residence when officers arrived and hindered their investigation. He was charged with obstructing and hindering and cited and released pending trial.
