U.S. Supreme Court To Hear MD Gerrymandering Case Today

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments today in two high-profile partisan gerrymandering cases, including one involving Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. The Herald Mail reports the nation’s high court in January announced it would hear the cases, which allege district lines were unconstitutionally drawn to favor one party. The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the cases followed Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh’s appeal of a lower federal court ruling in November that the current district map — drawn under former Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat — was unconstitutional. Maryland’s Republican Governor Larry Hogan created the commission to draw a new map- and hearings have been held across the district including one in Cumberland. Hogan has one of the more vocal critics of the re-districting that has taken place in Maryland in recent years…
