Union will hold rally to protest Governor Hogan’s budget

January 11th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

On Monday,  at 3:30 p.m.  state employees represented by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 3 will rally in Annapolis on the first Monday of the 2019 Legislative Session. With less than a week until Governor Hogan releases the first budget of his second term, the largest State Employees Union, AFSCME Maryland Council 3 have not reached a wage agreement.

“After months of negotiating, we were unable to reach an agreement for wage increases for the majority of Maryland’s State Employees. Governor Hogan’s administration demanded some of the most regressive ground rules in the country from our union, despite reaching agreements with no signed ground rules with other smaller unions,” explained Patrick Moran, President of AFSCME Maryland Council 3. “Furthermore we gave them a proposal and they refused to even look at it.  We attempted to meet with them throughout the month of December and they simply walked away and failed to bargain. Our members have been dangerously short-staffed for three years seriously sacrificing their safety and now, with an unprecedented budget surplus, Governor Hogan is demanding they also negotiate away their rights to communicate updates with their co-workers or to seek relief from the legislature when the State has an unprecedented economic surplus.”

We only make about twice what the average private sector worker does and that is not enough!

      > The idea that Maryland State employees are over paid is a lie. It is absolutely false. There is a reason why staffing positions are often vacant for years.
