A 21-year-old West Virginia University sophomore from New Jersey has been identified as the victim of a shooting Friday morning at an apartment near the school's downtown campus.

Eric J. Smith of Clementon, New Jersey, was found in a hallway outside one of the College Park apartments after authorities were called there about 4 a.m. to investigate reports of gunshots.

Two people, who have not been identified, were arrested a short time later near the Walmart on University Town Centre Drive. Police said they recovered a gun during the arrests.

Police have not released information about a possible motive.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon in Monongalia County Magistrate Court.

Police said Clementon, who was majoring in multidisciplinary studies, was a former resident at the apartment complex.

Counselors from the university's Carruth Center were at the apartment complex Friday morning to provide assistance to residents.
