Update on Hit and Run

On 9/3/2013 Troopers from the Cumberland Barrack responded to Upper Georges Creek Road near Shaft, regarding a hit and run collision. The investigation revealed that an unknown suspect(s) struck Onas Hanekamp, 66, of Lonaconing, Maryland while he was on a bicycle and then fled northbound on Upper Georges Creek Road toward Frostburg. Hanekamp was transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by Frostburg Ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was driving a white van that had no windows on the rear. The passenger side mirror was broken from the vehicle during the collision. Any information regarding the incident please contact TFC Z. Brinkman at the Cumberland Barrack at 301-729-2101.

***UPDATE***

On 9/3/2013 at approximately 2030 hours a tip led troopers from the Cumberland Barrack to John Baker Road, Westernport, MD where the suspect vehicle was located. Troopers discovered a tan Pontiac Montana Van bearing WV registration. Damage to the vehicle was consistent with the collision. The owner of the vehicle, Rachel Haggerty, 27, admitted to the collision and to leaving the scene of the accident. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
