September 7th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

A worker had to be pulled from a large construction ditch Wednesday afternoon at Allegany College of Maryland after an accident left him lodged at the bottom of the trench.

The Cumberland Times News reports the Cumberland Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel were dispatched to the scene at approximately 2:15 p.m. after a call was received of a possible trench collapse.

Workers with Thomas Construction of Barton were replacing a sewer line behind the college's Automotive Technology Building when one of their workers was involved in the accident, officials said.

Using ladders and a rescue basket, the man was removed from the trench by rescue personnel from the Cumberland Fire Department and the Allegany County Special Operations team.

He was transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Using a backhoe, a trench roughly 15 feet deep and 9 feet wide was dug to access the sewer line.

David DeWitt, vice president of finance and administration for the college, was on the scene following the accident.
