On 06/14/2017 at approximately 5:10pm deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the area of McMullen Highway and Ash Avenue in the Bowling Green area for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries.
Deputies arrived on scene in less than one minute and found a two vehicle accident with vehicles blocking both the north and south bound lanes of McMullen Highway. Deputies then assessed the scene and found one driver conscious but trapped in their vehicle. Deputies found the other driver out of their vehicle with reported minor injuries.
Upon the arrival of the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department extraction efforts were started. Upon the arrival of the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department a second extraction tool (Jaws of Life) was placed in service to assist ongoing efforts of the Bowling Green Fire Department. Extraction was completed by removing the doors and roof of the vehicle. Once the occupant was removed from the vehicle and was assessed by paramedics from the Allegany County EMS Division and EMS personnel with the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance. It was found that the individual was suffering from possible severe lower extremity injuries and the Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 5 was requested to the scene with the intention of flying the patient to Baltimore area trauma center.
Upon the arrival of MSPAC Trooper 5 a severe thunderstorm affected the Allegany County area. Due to the severe weather conditions the individual was flown to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. The other driver was transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by the LaVale Rescue Squad with minor injuries.
Once the vehicles were removed from the scene the roadway was reopened to traffic. McMullen Highway was shut down for over an hour.
The accident remains under investigation by the Allegany County Sheriff's Office.
