US 40/I-70 Interchange in Frederick County bridge replacement

March 20th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

– This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $3.5 million project to replace the bridge deck on eastbound US 40 over the ramp from westbound US 40 to westbound I-70 in Frederick County.  The project should be complete summer 2017, weather permitting.  The lane which carries eastbound US 40 over the ramp will be closed and traffic will be redirected.  SHA will shift westbound US 40 traffic to the shoulder, allowing eastbound and westbound traffic to share the westbound roadway.  In addition, a temporary traffic signal will be placed at the US 40/Kehne Road intersection, allowing access to US 40.

The bridge is safe, but the bridge deck (driving surface) has outlived its useful life and must be replaced.  This project will eliminate another bridge from SHA’s 69 structurally deficient bridges.
