Construction work planned at the crossing of the Great Allegheny Passage trail over Valley Street should move forward later this year after a second right of way needed for the project has been acquired that’s according to County Engineer Adam Patterson. The Cumberland Times News reports the county has budgeted $55,000 in county funds for the project, with a total projects cost of $215,000. The remainder of the funds will come from a federal grant. The path will be realigned from its current path crossing Valley Street as it comes to a bridge over Wills Creek to a path that goes under the bridge. The trail currently crosses Valley Street yards from the south end of the bridge, which also spans the tracks of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The plan is designed to alleviate safety concerns for bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists caused by limited visibility because of the angle of the bridge and road, and the speed at which motorists sometimes travel the street, county officials said. Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine has called the crossing a “true safety issue.”
