Van Hollen To Head Democratic Senate Campaign Efforts

November 18th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Chris Van Hollen hasn't even been sworn in as a senator and he's already been handed responsibility for getting more Democrats into the Senate.

Van Hollen, the Montgomery County congressman elected to the seat of the retiring Barbara Mikulski, will serve as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for the 2018 cycle, Sen. Chuck Schumer announced. Schumer is set to become Senate minority leader with the retirement of Sen. Harry Reid.

“Chris Van Hollen was our first choice for DSCC chairman because of his talents, his work ethic, and his experience," ,” Schumer said in a statement. He has the confidence of our caucus and will do a great job for our candidates running in 2018. The map is tough for Democrats, but I have no doubt that Senator-elect Van Hollen is up to the task."

Van Hollen has been in a similar position before, as chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee following the 2006 elections, when Democrats swept to majorities in both houses. He's the first asked to chair the DSCC even before his swearing-in.
