We also encourage all residents to take precautions in preparation for this weather event:
Monitor weather reports so you know the latest forecast for extreme weather conditions.
If you must venture outside, wear a hat, gloves, scarf, warm coat and warm footwear; dress in layers beneath the coat to trap body heat. Do not stay outside any longer than absolutely necessary. Hypothermia and frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes.
Extreme weather events always pose the potential for extended power outages. Make sure you have a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food
Keep cell phone, iPads, laptops and other electronic devices charged for emergency communications needs.
Never use a portable generator inside the house, or in the garage or carport.
If the power goes out, close the doors to rooms you don’t need to use and stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors to cut down on drafts.
Eating and drinking can help you stay warm, and ensure you take in enough fluids to prevent dehydration (avoid alcoholic beverages as they may contribute to dehydration).
Per Potomac Edison, if an outage occurs as a result of severe weather, customers should call 1-888-LIGHTS (1-888-544-4877) to report their outage. Customers should report downed power wires to their utility or their local police or fire department. Never go near a downed power line.
In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
