Warming Shelter Remains Open as Power Outages Continue

December 17th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Estimated power restoration for Potomac Edison customers in Western Maryland has been updated to 6 p.m. on Thursday, according to PE officials.

In a release by Potomac Edison, 1881 customers remain without power, a large majority of those in the Frostburg, George’s Creek and Mt. Savage area.

“The warming shelter that was opened earlier today at the Midland Fire Department will stay open until noon tomorrow,” Emergency Services Deputy Director Roger Bennett said. “We have been in close contact with Potomac Edison and when they estimate services to be restored.”

The center is located on 14823 Broadway Avenue in Midland.

Significant icing from Monday’s winter weather has weighted down trees and branches, ultimately falling and knocking down power lines, Bennett said.

The Allegany County Joint Communications Center handled over 50 calls reporting power lines and trees down in Allegany County over the past 24 hours. These incidents were handled by local fire departments, county and state roads departments.
