WCI workers hospitalized after opening letter

September 7th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports two workers at Western Correctional Institution were hospitalized Friday after opening a letter soaked in an unknown liquid. The incident happened at about 10:15 a.m. in the mailroom of the maximum security facility's administrative building. A mailroom employee and correctional officer complained of irritation after opening the letter and were taken to Western Regional Medical Center to be evaluated, said Gerard Shields, a spokesman for Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. He said hazmat officials responded to the scene to clear and ventilate the building and retrieved the letter to test substance. Normal facility operations resumed at about 12:55 p.m. Maryland State Police and several fire and ambulance companies responded to the scene.
