UPDATED: Nearly 60 Vehicles in 30 Crashes on Westbound Interstate in Garrett County

6:30 PM UPDATE:  On Sunday at 12:37 PM troopers from the MSP McHenry Barrack responded to westbound I-68 at the 29 mile marker in reference to a multi vehicle collision. Upon arrival troopers discovered a total of 58 vehicles were involved in 29 separate collisions. 10 people were transported to Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland, Maryland with non life threatening injuries.

It is unknown at this time what started the initial collision. There was heavy fog in the area at the time of the collision which is believed to be a factor in the collisions. Westbound I-68 was shut down for approximately 4 hours.

5:00 PM UPDATE:   

Garrett County Emergency Management and VFDs on the scene confirm that over 25 vehicles have been involved in accidents on I 68 westbound in Garrett County.  Numerous fire and rescue apparatus have responded.

The McHenry Barrack of Maryland State Police issued the following statement:

At 12:37 hours on 12/1/19 Troopers from Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack responded to a multi vehicle accident at west bound I-68 at the 29 mile marker. Upon arrival it was determined approximately 25 vehicles became involved in numerous collisions due to the heavy fog creating limited visibility in the area. At this time W/B I-68 is shut down due to the collision. There are unknown injuries at this time. Update will follow.

INITIAL REPORT:

Allegany County 911 reports that icy conditions and numerous vehicle accidents have resulted in the shutdown of westbound Interstate 68 at the Garrett County line.
