Western Maryland Food Bank Getting Support from ACM Groups

November 30th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany College of Maryland men’s basketball team and two student organizations are teaming up for “Hoops for Hunger,” a food drive that will help the Western Maryland Food Bank help area families in need.

Fans at ACM’s “Christmas Classic” tournament, scheduled Dec. 4-5, are asked to bring a bag of non-perishable food items to the gymnasium door, which will gain them entrance in place of the regular admission fee.

Canned fruit, vegetables and meat as well as dried pasta and jarred sauce, peanut butter and breakfast cereal are among the items that will help the local food pantry replenish its shelves.

Members of the college Volunteer Club and students in developmental education classes have partnered with the men’s basketball team in the campus food drive. In addition to gate-free admission, those who donate a bag of groceries are eligible to enter a drawing for a gift card.

"We hope our guests want to donate to a great cause and help us shut out hunger," said Tommie Reams, head men’s basketball coach.

The ACM Trojans are hosting three teams in the two-day tournament – Butler County (Pa.) Community College, Hagerstown Community College and Potomac State College of West Virginia University.

The action begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, with a game between Butler and Hagerstown followed at 7 p.m. with ACM vs. Potomac State. Play resumes the following day at 1 p.m. with Butler facing Potomac State and again at 3 p.m. with ACM against Hagerstown.
