Nancy Smith Beall, 84, widow of former U.S. Senator J. Glenn Beall Jr. of Maryland, died March 6, 2015, at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

Nancy Lee Smith was born on June 19, 1930, to the late William Donald Smith and Helen Berkibile Smith. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Donald Smith Jr. and Marlin Berkey Smith.

Nancy was a 1948 graduate of Allegany High School and attended Sullins College in Bristol, Va. After graduating from college, Nancy returned to Cumberland where she would eventually meet Glenn Beall on a train ride from Cumberland to Washington, D.C. Following a six year courtship, they were married in Cumberland, August 1959, and were together until his death in 2006. The early years of their marriage were spent in Frostburg, where Glenn was working in the family insurance business. Nancy quickly learned about politics when her husband ran for, and was elected to, the Maryland House of Delegates in 1962. A proud political wife, supportive mother, homemaker and avid golfer, Nancy remained in Frostburg until her husband was elected to U.S. House of Representatives in 1968. At that time, they began dividing their time between Washington and Western Maryland. While in Washington, Nancy was involved with various organizations across the state of Maryland and accompanied her husband to political functions, as well as, becoming a tireless campaigner. She was a member of the Ladies of the United States Senate Red Cross Unit, the International Neighbors Club and the Congressional Club in Washington D.C. Following Glennʼs retirement from politics and business, they enjoyed travel, golf and dividing time between their homes in Maryland and Florida. Nancy also became an advocate for children, which she was honored last October with the dedication of the new Nancy Smith Beall Fitness and Training Center at the Maryland Childrenʼs Trust in Frostburg. She was a member of St. Johnʼs Episcopal Church, Frostburg, All Saints Episcopal Church, Fort Lauderdale, The Congressional Club in Washington, Cumberland Country Club and Fort Lauderdale Country Club.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Victoria Beall Muth, North Bethesda; brother-in-law, George Beall and wife, Carolyn, of Naples; sisters-in-law, Beverly Beall (Richard Beall) of Baltimore, Joan Smith (Berkey Smith), and Barbara Smith (Bill Smith) of Cumberland; six nieces, and two nephews.
