Wilkes Arrested After Hospital Release

June 18th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

An Altamont Terrace man has been jailed in lieu of $50,000 after being officially charged with several drug offenses and resisting arrest after a situation that developed a week ago.

Police say 26-year old Rodricus Wilkes was initially picked up after they received a call from a citizen who claimed a drug deal was taking place on Charles Street, and that they could hear an argument.  During the course of the arrest, police say they found Wilkes in a vehicle, and he tried to flee.  The officer, identified in court records as Corporal Korey Rounds, used a taser to subdue the suspect.  Wilkes was released from Western Maryland Health Systems this morning.

Friends of Wilkes have contacted WCBC News and alleged that he was physically assaulted during the arrest, requiring extensive medical treatment.  Cumberland Police Chief Charles Hinnant tells us that there has been no complaint lodged against his agency at this point, and no one from the Wilkes family has contacted him to register any sort of objection to the manner of arrest.
