WMSR’S New Locomotive Unveiled

The steam whistle could be heard for miles and steam emanated from the chimney this week as Western Maryland Scenic Railroad representatives showcased the Baldwin Locomotive No. 1309. The unveiling took place before a crowd of train supporters, railroad personnel and management and area elected officials. While the 1949 Baldwin, purchased in 2014, has faced a series of roadblocks and delays in the effort to get it up and operational, Railroad general manager John Garner is optimistic tourist train will be ready by the fall to make the 14-mile excursions from Cumberland to the Frostburg Depot.  Garner says that the steam engine, nicknamed “Maryland Thunder”, should provide a tremendous shot in the arm for the region’s economy…

      Didn’t today’s paper say they’ve lost $650K this year? Easy solution to that – double the fares.

    Why won’t the state or feds help scenic railroads. If they have lost $650,000, someone should give them some relief funding as well.
