Advocates Push For Healthy Vending On State Property

February 5th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Some health advocates say what is good for Howard County is good for the rest of the state and they are taking their case to Annapolis.

Members of Sugar Free Kids Maryland, and the American Heart Association were in Annapolis today to lobby for passage of the "Maryland Healthy Vending Act."

Similar to an ordinance enacted last year in Howard County, the Maryland Healthy Vending Act would require 75 percent of what is sold in vending machines on state property meet healthy food and drink standards, to prevent obesity. The bill requires food and drinks meet federal guidelines for trans-fat and sodium.

Michaeline Fedder, director of government relations of the American Heart Association says the bill doesn’t ban anything from being sold
