Allegany, Garrett school systems forming new athletic conference

April 13th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

WCBC News has learned that a new athletic conference is being formed with Allegany County Public Schools and Garrett County Public Schools, which will be similar to the old WMIL. Representatives from these groups are planning to work on the by-laws in the coming weeks. With the differences in rules and regulations in Maryland vs. West Virginia, it was becoming increasingly difficult to continue with the AMAC conference. Additionally, no clear winner could really be established when some schools played each other twice, some only once, and some not at all.  Every school in the new conference will play each team in each sport twice during their season, and beginning with the 2020-2021 season, each school will be playing in football as well. These teams will follow MPSSAA rules and regulations dictating the number of games, play dates, practice dates, playoff system, etc., which will also help all schools avoid scheduling conflicts.  ACPS will continue to play area schools (Keyser, Frankfort, BW); however, they will now be able to determine where they are able to fit them into their schedules.
