According to the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, two correctional officers at the North Branch Correctional Institution have been credited for saving the life of a choking inmate Monday night. DPSCS spokesman Mark Vernarelli.said that officers Dennis Blauch and Ronnie Dolly “used the Heimlich Maneuver and back thrusts to dislodge food from the 28-year-old inmate’s throat during the dinner meal. The rescued inmate was seen in the NBCI medical unit afterwards and did not require a trip to the hospital. Stephen Moyer, Secretary of the MD Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, personally called the officers Monday night and thanked them for their fast response. Inmates who were in the dinner line at the time also thanked the officers for saving their fellow inmate's life. Vernarelli added that the system will honor the officers for their actions during the upcoming Employee Appreciation Week in May.
