Congressman Will Help Honor Local Veteran

Maryland Sixth District Congressman John Delaney will be in Allegany County this weekend for a number of events. Topping his agenda, a Sunday morning ceremony at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church on Frderick Street in Cumberland to honor World War II Veteran Irvin W. “Butch” Johnson of Cumberland. Johnson will  receive his Silver Star Medal from Major General Bill Rapp, Commandant of the United States Army War College  70 years after he earned it.  As a member of the 87th Infantry Division, Johnson fought against the German Army in Europe, becoming a Staff Sergeant and Squad Leader.  Johnson was awarded the Silver Star in February of 1945, but never received official recognition. The Silver Star Medal is America’s third highest military decoration and is awarded for gallantry in action against the enemy.  Also Sunday, Congressman Delaney (MD-6) will hold public office hours at Frostburg State University. Delaney will hold one-on-one meetings with constituents at the FSU Lane Center, Room 109 between 1:30 and 3 PM. Meetings are held at the event on a first come first serve basis and Delaney staff will also be available.
