Shock and disappointment probably the words best describing the reactions of the Allegany County Board of Education members on Wednesday afternoon when bids for the new Allegany High School came in a range of five to ten million dollars higher than projections. The architects estimate for the project had been $42 million. On Wednesday the bids of the five construction companies submitting proposals were opened in public session. Going by the base bid alone- Fiori Construction out of Altoona was the low bid, at $46.9 million. P.J. Dick of Pittsburgh came in at $48.1 million; Manheim Corporation out of Pittsburgh at $48.3 million; Dustin Construction from the Frederick Md area at $49.3 and the high bid was Mascara Construction of Pittsburgh at $49.9 million. Each company also submitted separate bids for more than two dozen add alternates such as additional classrooms, the auditorium and athletic fields tacking millions of additional dollars onto each overall bid proposal.
