Footer Dye Works Project In Limbo

Following a meeting with state budget secretary David Brinkley last week, members of the District 1 legislative delegation were left in limbo regarding the possibility of state dollars for the Footer Dye Works project.  $1.2 million is being sought by the Canal Place Authority of project developer for necessary infrastructure improvements to the aging structure. Without state dollars secured, the project could be in serious jeopardy. Officials close to the redevelopment project said if the state doesn’t invest in the upgrades, it will be forced to pay for the demolition of the building or try to land a private investor to take over the building and pay for the entire rehabilitation of the property. Despite the belief in some circles that the Footer building can’t be demolished because of its designation by the Maryland Historical Trust as an historic structure- that isn’t the case. Recently retired Historic Trust executive director Rodney Little has stated on several occasions, that while there may be some hurdles to overcome, if the building is deemed to be in deteriorating condition- it could be targeted for leveling…
