Fort Hill To Host MMR Clinic Tuesday

August 31st, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Health Department will hold a free vaccination clinic at Fort Hill High School, Tuesday, September 1, 2015, from 3-7 p.m. for all Fort Hill students and staff in response to four confirmed cases of mumps. Also eligible to receive the vaccine are Career Center students in the Fort Hill band, bus drivers for Fort Hill and substitute teachers who have been working at Fort Hill or who plan to work there in the upcoming weeks. Other ACPS staff that has visited Fort Hill recently during the course of their regular job duties may be eligible on a case-by-case basis. In addition, staff members employed by the day care located at Fort Hill will also receive the vaccine.

The booster dose of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is being provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH).  All students under the age of eighteen who plan to receive the vaccine must have a parent present and will be responsible for providing their own transportation home from school.

Students who are ineligible to receive the free vaccine at tomorrow’s clinic include siblings of Fort Hill students who attend another school, Fort Hill students who attend the Career Center (with the exception of band students), and Fort Hill students who attend any alternative programming.

In order to proactively combat the spread of the mumps cases at Fort Hill, the CDC has recommended that a third dose of vaccine be administered to increase the level of protection against the mumps virus. For more information about mumps and the MMR vaccine, contact the Health Department at 301-759-5090 or visit www.cdc.gov/mumps
