Frost Elementary gets national recognition

September 30th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, it was announced that Frost Elementary School is among only six schools in the state to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School on the basis of rigorous state and national requirements for high achievement and significant improvement.

“These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education – that all students, no matter their socioeconomic status or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” said U.S. Education Secretary, Arne Duncan.  “We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student.”

Last year, Frost was recognized as a 2014 Maryland Blue Ribbon School.  State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Lillian Lowery, took a “Tour of Excellence” at Frost in April to honor all of the hard-working staff members for their dedication and commitment to student achievement.  Frost, along with 286 other public and 50 private schools, will be honored at a recognition ceremony on November 10-11, 2014, in Washington, D.C.

The Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence program is a state and national recognition program that honors selected schools for their outstanding accomplishments in student achievement as measured by assessment scores.  Schools are selected for being high achievers in reading and math, and many serve a significant number of economically disadvantaged students.  Other achievement indicators include school leadership, professional development, instructional approaches, and parent and community involvement.

Frost has much to be proud of, all of which factored in to their selection as a Maryland Blue Ribbon School.  More than 95% of Frost’s students obtained proficient or advanced MSA scores in reading and math, consistently excelling in student performance on state assessments.  Aditionally, 100% of Frost’s teachers are highly qualified.

Community partnerships help to support the school’s instructional program, and in turn, Frost supports various local and national charities.  Frost is a “green school” and participates in a school-wide recycling program.  Frost has also been recognized as a PBIS Maryland Gold Standard School for the past five years.

“I am so proud of Frost’s school community for their hard work and commitment that benefits all children each and every day,” said Allegany County Public Schools’ Superintendent, Dr. David Cox.

“Our school performance is a testament to the Frost Elementary School staff’s commitment to student achievement,” said principal, Kim Smith.  “The faculty’s effective instruction, focus and hard work lead our students to meet high expectations.”  She went on to say, “Our parents are dedicated to supporting the teachers and school in a partnership of learning, and our student achievement success is a reflection of the teamwork between teachers, parents, students, and the Frost community.”

Other National Blue Ribbon Schools include Linthicum Elementary School, Anne Arundel County; Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, Baltimore County; Northern Garrett High School, Garrett County; Cashell Elementary School, Montgomery County; and Robert Goddard French Immersion Elementary/Middle School, Prince George’s County.
