Garrett County On Board With Medical Marijuana

September 4th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports the Garrett County commissioners have sent letters of support to state officials in support of five medical cannabis companies hoping to be granted a state license for locating indoor growing facilties within the county. Most of the companies are interested in locating in the northern end of the county and two have expressed interest in opening a dispensary, said Paul Edwards, county commission chairman.

“It is hard to tell how many of them will actually apply for a dispensary license in Garrett County because most of the applications are a work in progress,” he said.

The licensing process is competitive, with 15 licenses expected to be issued by late 2015. The first stage of the application process is expected to begin this month and each Stage 1 license approval has 365 days to complete all necessary steps to obtain a license and to request final inspection by the Medical Cannabis Commission, according to the commission’s website.

“Two licenses will be granted in our senatorial district and there is little the board or citizens will be able to do to affect a state decision,” said Edwards, according to a report by the Garrett County Grand Jury.

The cannabis commission anticipates medical cannabis could become available to patients in the second half of 2016.
