Governor Says Immigrants Won’t Be Detained

Governor Martin O'Malley has told federal officials Maryland will no longer detain suspected illegal immigrants in the the Central Booking facility in Baltimore City.

The governor notified Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson of his intentions, in a letter released today.

O'Malley told Johnson the state will only detain suspected illegal immigrants if they are charged with other crimes.  In his letter, O'Malley said that he had concerns that , "a greater percentage of non-criminal immigrants are deported from Maryland than other states."

O'Malley told Johnson that Maryland's policy will mirror the one that is already in place in New York City.

In a statement released through his office, O'Malley said his action today will make Maryland "more inclusive."
