Governor Martin O'Malley last week informed federal officials, Maryland will no longer detain suspected illegal immigrants in the Central Booking facility in Baltimore City. The governor notified Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson of his intentions. O'Malley told Johnson the state will only detain suspected illegal immigrants if they are charged with other crimes. In his letter, O'Malley said that he had concerns that, "a greater percentage of non-criminal immigrants are deported from Maryland than other states." Pointing to the DREAM Act and expanded access to driver's licenses and ID options to undocumented residents, he called this a continuation of the state’s policies of inclusion. He says those policies are getting results, leading to the lowest unemployment rate in the nation for Hispanic Americans and doubling the amount of state contracts awarded to Hispanic businesses…
