Update: Suspect in WCI death identified

 A suspect has been identified in the early Wednesday death of an inmate at the Western Correctional Institution who was found unresponsive in his bed with a bed sheet tied around his neck.

Darrell S. Murray, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS personnel after correctional officers and institution medical staff had begun immediate resuscitation efforts along with medical personnel.

 

No significant trauma was observed on the victim’s body. Autopsy results are being awaited to determined the cause and manner of death.

The investigation of the 3 a.m., incident is being conducted by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit with assistance of its Criminal Enforcement Division, Forensic Services Division and investigators with the C3I Unit and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigation Division.

No charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing.

The inmate death is the second to occur at the maximum-security prison complex on U.S. 200 where WCI and the North Branch Correctional Institution is located.

On July 16, NBCI inmate Terrance Cirata, 59, was found dead in his cell. Autopsy showed he died of asphyxia and the manner of death was homicide.

The incident remains under investigation. An inmate has been identified as a suspect in the case.
