The North-South Appalachian Highway project remains the top priority of The Greater Cumberland Committee. While bringing elected officials from three different states together has been a challenge- is has not proved insurmountable. The Committee has been the cornerstone of this project since 2009. The coalition is a three-state group of individual businesses, county and municipal governments, and non-profit organizations, which is focused on the development of US Route 219 from Somerset, Pa., to the Maryland State line and US Route 220 from the Cumberland area to Appalachian Corridor H in West Virginia. The North/South Appalachian Highway is composed of two distinct legs, US 219 North and US 220 South, which as a total corridor is projected to create 10,000 permanent and 20,000 construction-related jobs in the region. Committee Chair Brenda Smith tells WCBC News that coordinating with Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia officials to focus on the mutual benefits of the project has been accomplished.
