The 23rd Annual Allegany County Phonebook Recycling Campaign will take place in all Allegany County Public Schools March 23, 2015, through April 24, 2015. The event also aligns with Earth Day, April 22, 2015, as Allegany County asks the community to do their part to help make the Earth a better place for future generations.
In 2014, ACPS students collected a total of 9,469 phonebooks, resulting in the diversion of them from local landfills. This year cash prizes will be awarded to the top five collecting schools: 1st place, $200; 2nd place, $150; 3rd place, $100; 4th place, $75; and 5th place, $50. These cash prizes are made possible thanks to the generosity of area businesses. Award determinations are based on the ratio of phonebooks collected to the total school population.
For middle school and high school students, this is an excellent opportunity to earn additional service learning credit hours. Students who participate in the preparation, action and reflection pieces of the Phonebook Recycling Program can earn three (3) service-learning credits for their efforts. Students should contact their science teacher for more details.
Terry Bennett, Allegany County Recycling Coordinator, and the ACPS Secondary Science Supervisor, Eric VanSlyke, provide oversight for the phonebook recycling project.
