On December 5, 2013 officers from the Cumberland City Police Department responded to Martins Market located at 739 Park Street for a shoplifting complaint. Upon the officers arrival they made contact with a store employee who had Shannon Jeanette Gunning detained for shoplifting. According to the store employee, Gunning was at the front register attempting to pay for an item she obtained inside the store. While Gunning was paying for the item the store employee noticed Gunning's purse to be very bulky. After Gunning left the store she was confronted by the employee in the front parking lot. Gunning agreed to go back inside the store at which time she emptied her purse. Several unpaid items were located after Gunning emptied her purse. Gunning was later contacted by the officers and arrested. Gunning was transported to the Cumberland City Police Department for processing. Gunning was issued a criminal citation for theft under $100 and released pending her trial date in District Court.
