Several Local Organizations Calling For Moratorium On Fracking

A coalition of 79 organizations, including several local organizations, is calling for legislative action for a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing in Maryland. A statement released this week by the Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility and Food & Water Watch reads “based on what we know now, we believe that fracking endangers public health and is the wrong approach to building a robust Maryland economy and a clean energy future. We urge Maryland’s legislature to pass an extended moratorium in 2015”.  At least one bill to ban the practice has been introduced in the Maryland General Assembly. The idea of a moratorium is not new, having been first proposed by then Delegate Heather Mizeur in the fall of 2012. Mizeur, who stepped down from her house position last year to run for governor, served three years on the governor’s commission studying the impacts of fracking. She tells WCBC News that although some stringent regulations have been proposed for fracking, there remains too many concerns to move forward with any drilling….
