Statewide Bills Propose End To Newspaper Notices On Government Meetings

February 11th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Though Anne Arundel County has withdrawn a proposal to advertise some public notices on the government’s website rather than in newspapers, other bills in the legislature could have similar implications across the state.

Sen. Nancy King has two pieces of legislation, requested by Montgomery County, pending in the General Assembly, both of which are statewide bills.

Senate Bill 580, proposes an amendment to the Maryland Constitution. The legislation would result in a ballot question put to voters on whether the state would adopt or reject the change.

Senate Bill 581 allows a county or city to satisfy their legal notices requirement by posting on their own websites.

Both bills will have hearings in a Senate committee March 1. Their companion bills in the House of Delegates will having hearings Feb. 23.
