Tanker accident has Oakland evacuated

According to Garrett County officials, a tanker carrying a load of propane reportedly overturned Wednesday morning in the town of Oakland, forcing an evacuation of the area. The Allegany County 911 center was made aware of the matter shortly after 10 a.m. by a command post set up by firstresponders in the Oakland area.

The tanker carrying 10,000 gallons of propane overturned at Oak and Third streets and apparently was not leaking. The Cumberland Times News reported that an evacuation of the area was underway.  County officials requested people to avoid the downtown area. Sand Flat Road was set up as a detour from both U.S. Route 219 and state Route 135.

The Garrett County 911 center was evacuated to its back-up communications center at the Garrett County Airport within a short time of the incident. The county courthouse also was evacuated and closed for the day. Allegany County 911 center was handling emergency 911 calls for Garrett County at about 10:30 a.m.
