March 29th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

On Tuesday, 03/29/2016, at 1:18 AM, the Cumberland Police responded to a reported armed robbery at the 7-11 convenience store, located on Maryland Avenue. When Officers arrived they learned that a single male suspect entered the store, produced a handgun, and demanded cash from the clerk on duty. The clerk complied with the suspect's demands and gave him an undisclosed sum of money from the cash registers. The suspect then fled the store on foot.

A search of the immediate area, including the use of a K-9 dog, was conducted by the Cumberland Police, but the suspect was not located at that time.

Shortly after that, at 2:02 AM, the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to the Sheetz convenience store in Corriganville for another reported armed robbery. When Deputies arrived they learned that a single male suspect entered the store, produced a handgun, and demanded cash from the clerk on duty. The clerk complied with the suspect's demands and gave him an undisclosed sum of money from the cash registers. The suspect then fled the store on foot.

A search of the immediate area was conducted by the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of Troopers from the Maryland State Police, but the suspect was not located at that time.

Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to both locations to assist in the investigation. Investigators interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance video from both locations. Review of the video revealed that the same suspect was responsible for both robberies.

The suspect is described as a black male, short with a stocky build. He was wearing a white long sleeve shirt with black sleeves, dark pants, and a blue bandana over his face in an attempt to hide his features. At 7-11 he was wearing sunglasses, but at Sheetz he was not. In both cases the suspect produced a small silver colored handgun, possibly a revolver, from his waistband.

This is the third armed robbery in the area in the past week. On 03/25/2016, at 3:33 AM, single black male suspect, armed with a small silver colored handgun, robbed the Pit & Go convenience store on Frederick Street in Cumberland. Investigators believe all three cases are related.

Investigators are further advising businesses that are open during that time of day to take extra precaution, including locking entrance and exit doors, and only letting in customers who do not appear to be trying to be wear clothing, or other articles, to hide their faces and/or disguise their features. If there is any doubt, contact law enforcement to come and check the situation out.
