Little Free Library

Little Free Library has opened in Historic downtown Cumberland. The Minecraft-themed Little Free Library is located at the corner of Merchants Alley and South Liberty Street. Take a book, leave a book. If you see a book you would like to read, feel free to take it with you. Return it to the Little Free Library when you have finished. Give a book and help keep this Little Free Library operating by leaving a book for others to read.


WV Parenting

There are currently 6,900 children in the state care in West Virgina, many of these children need a home. Burlington United Methodist Family Services is requestiong your help. National Federation of the Blind of Maryland Western Maryland Chapter

The Western Maryland chapter of the National Federation of the Blind is seeking new members as it starts its local membership drive! Are you blind, visually impaired or know someone who is or maybe you work with the visually impaired? Consider joining the state's fastest growing chapter here in Western Maryland. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back. The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Hounds Around Town

Looking for a day filled with furry friends and fun? Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter's "Hounds Around Town" program, which allows individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The most important thing is you are giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. Schaidt Scholarship

St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cumberland, is accepting applications for the Mortimer C. and Elizabeth Ann Schaidt Scholastic Tuition Fund for the 2024-2025 academic year. While preference is given to members of St. Paul's, any Allegany County student may apply. The award is limited to payment of tuition at an accredited institution offering a two- or four-year degree, graduate degree, technical or vocational training. The application period is open from Monday, April 15th to Saturday, June 15th, 2024. Bountiful Blessings

St. Paul Lutheran Church, Washington and Smallwood Streets, will hold Bountiful Blessings on Thursday, April 25th, 4:00PM – 6:00PM. Recipients should arrive no lataer than 5:30PM to be able to select items. A photo ID is required for participants who have yet to register for 2024. The program provides cleaning supplies, paper goods and personal hygiene items.

National Day of Prayer Event

2024 celebrates the 28th Anniversary of  the Cumberland Area National Day of Prayer. This years guest speaker will be Marziyeh Amirizadeh. A Christian evangelist and published author, Marziyeh shares her inspiring story as a Christian woman in an Islamic country who was captured and imprisioned because of her faith. In her very relevant message, she brings awareness about ongoing human rights violations and persecution of religious minorities in Iran. Her uplifting discovery of how God can transform any situation into triumph is sure to encourage many in our region. To kick off the National Day of Prayer events, Marziyeh will share her powerful message, Sunday April 28th at Lighthouse of Hope Church for a worship service at 10:45AM at 11507 Moss Avenue.

The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 426 will be holding their Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast, Sunday, April 28th, 8:00AM-12:00PM at the Greater Cumberland Airport in Wiley Ford, WV. All you can eat breakfast will include hotcakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, fried potatoes, fruit cocktail, coffee, and OJ. All you can eat on the premises for $12.00 for adults and $6.00 children under age 12. Frree "Young Eagle" airplane rides for ages 8 thru 17, weather permitting and pilots available. National Day of Prayer Event

2024 celebrates the 28th Anniversary of  the Cumberland Area National Day of Prayer. This years guest speaker will be Marziyeh Amirizadeh. A Christian evangelist and published author, Marziyeh shares her inspiring story as a Christian woman in an Islamic country who was captured and imprisioned because of her faith. In her very relevant message, she brings awareness about ongoing human rights violations and persecution of religious minorities in Iran. Her uplifting discovery of how God can transform any situation into triumph is sure to encourage many in our region. An Evening Prayer Rally will be held Wednesday, May 1st, at Central Assembly Church of All Nation, 6:30PM at 2020 Bedford Street. Merziyeh will share her powerful testimony, plusa community choir and the Lighthouse of Hope Worship Band.

This event requires tickets, which can be purchased at Holy Grounds or Rock of Ages Restaurant.

Fine China Outdoor Event

Come out for an evening  with Fine China as they host their first outdoor service, taking place in the CBIZ parking lot, Friday, May 3rd, 5:00PM-8:00PM. The service will include live music from Ken Nolan, hotdogs on the grill, a drama, testimonies of overcoming addiction, suicide and MS. Please be sure to bring your own chair.

LaVale Lions Chicken BBQ Fundraiser

The LaVale Lions May Spring Chicken BBQ fundraiser will be held Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th from10:00AM-7:00PM or until the daily allotment is sold out.and Sunday, May 5th, 10:00AM until sold out, at the Lions Field area on Braddock Road. BBQ dinner will include half a chicken and a roll for $8. Also available for purchase will be french fries, baked beans, desserts, soft drinks and water. Early bird tickets are available for purchase from LaVale Lions Club members, at Jolly Roger Liquors, Burkey's Furniture, LaVale Pharmacy and Caporale's Bakery.

Fishing Rodeo

Blackhawk Tribe 131 & Petunia Council 10 wil be holding a Fishing Rodeo, Saturday, June 8th at 128 Maryland Ave, Westernport, MD. Registration will begin at 8:00AM and the Fishing Rodeo will start at 9:00AM. Catches must be turned into registration by 1:00PM and awards will be presented at 1:30PM. Prizes will be award to: Largest Fish $50 (1 prize per age group), Smallest Fish $20 (1 prize per age group) and Most Unique Catch (1 overall prize awarded). All ages are welcome to register, cost is $5.00 per person, Children 6 and under are free. There will be 3 age groups: Ages 1-10, Ages 11-17 and Ages 17 & up. Food and drink will be sold on site.

Ladew Topiary Gardens Bus Trip

The House and Garden Club of Frostburg is hosting a charter bus trip to Ladew Topiary Garden in Monkton, MD, Monday, June 10th. The cost will be $80 for trasportation including entrance fee. Additional $7 Docent-Guided Manor House Tours are available (purchased at Admissions on a first come-first served basis). The charter will be contingent on having at least 40 passengers with paid reservations by Friday, May 15th. Make checks payable to the House and Garden Club of Frostburg and mail to PO Box 615, Frostburg, MD 21532. Ladew Topiary Gardens is known as one of the 10 best Topiary Gardens in the world and one of the top 5 garends in North America. The garden features 22 acres of spectacular award-winning gardens, more than 100 remarkable toparies, a mile-long Nature Walk and 12 garden "rooms" including the Rose, White, Yellow, Sculpture and Iris Gardens and a circa 1797 Manor House. A life-size Hunt Scene of topiary horses, riders, hounds and fox welcomes visitors as they arrive and stands as one of one of the best-known elements of the Gardens. The historic Manor House offers optional 30-minute docent-guided tours 11:00AM, 12:00PM, 1:00PM & 2:00PM. The Bollman's Charter bus will leave at 8:00AM from the Frostburg Plaza (Big Lots) at the East end of town. Return time will be approximately 5:30PM.
