1812 Brewery hosting fundraiser for Special Love cancer outreach

August 10th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

A fundraiser for Special Love, a program for children with cancer that provides camps and a community of support to children with cancer and their families, is being hosted by 1812 Brewery on Aug. 10 beginning at 4 p.m. The event will include music by the Cramer Brothers as well as a silent auction. The money collected from a pre-set entrance fee is designated for Special Love. The brewery has set a goal to cover the cost of sending at least one local child to each of the two Special Love camps next summer. Twenty to 30 children in the region are diagnosed with cancer annually.

“Cancer has no boundaries,” said 1812 owner Cory McCagh. “Members of my family have been involved as volunteers to Special Love and we have all been touched by what this organization accomplishes, both for the child with cancer and for that child’s family. We are honored to be able to support its efforts. Once again our community has stepped up and we have some pretty great auction ideas, including Steelers tickets, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad train tickets, photography sessions and so much more.”

For more than three decades, Special Love has helped children with cancer to “just be kids,” through camps, emergency financial assistance, collect scholarships and most importantly, with a community of support that assures struggling families that they’re not alone in the battle.

Camp Fantastic in Front Royal, Virginia, is designed for kids with cancer to have a week where they are just kids. The week is filled with swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, marshmallow roasting, campfire singing and allowing children with cancer to enjoy a traditional camp.

BRASS (Brothers and SiSters) Camp on the Eastern Shore is designed for siblings of children with cancer. These children often feel guilty, invisible or ignored. As brothers and sisters experience the same emotional upheaval as parents, they may have less capacity to cope. Camp Brass becomes an important outlet as siblings adjust to a new family routine. Along with music from the Cramer Brothers and the silent auction, SOB Barbeque food truck will be making its 1812 Brewery debut. The event is open to the public and is family friendly.
