200 Area Residents Turn Out To React To Proposal To Close The Catholic Shrine At St. Peter & Paul

April 4th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

About 200 people interested in the future of the Catholic Shrine at St. Peter & Paul on Fayette Street turned out last evening to react to the recent proposal to close the church and sell the property.

After a presentation on how the recommendation was reached, long time parishioners took turns explaining the history of the church and their family ties to it.

Chris Logsdon says he wants the Sts. Peter and Paul to stay…

During the meeting, which was designed as a listening session, it was revealed that Baltimore Archbishop William Lori had visited Cumberland last week, and is committed to bringing more Catholic resources to Mountain Maryland.

I hope this is not closed. It is a part of our local history. I grew up attending this church.

I appreciate the deep feelings on this issue. The question remains how many of the 200 are in church every single week and contributing money to the local church?

      >I live out of town but come back to Cumberland just about every month. I’d love to go but after they made it a shrine, the only masses they offer that I can attend at Christmas and Easter (the rest are weekdays.) And yes, I give money through the collections, the shrine care fund and “embracing our mission.” The shrine should offer Sunday masses again-not be closed!

These days not everyone can contribute. Five dollars to some is food or gas.
