2013 Maryland General Assembly Session Comes To A Close

The 2013 session of the Maryland General Assembly was gaveled to a close Monday night- and for the first time in years it was a relatively quiet final day with most of the major pieces of legislation and the governors initiatives handled well in advance of sine die. There was no shortage of controversial issues- most notably the governors push to repeal the death penalty and to ban certain assault weapons- however there were more than enough vote in both houses to secure passage of both.  Last year a number of controversial measures including the dream act; gay marriage and expanded gambling were all petitioned to referendum for the voters to decide. Senate President Mike Miller says that although the gun control measure is an emotional issue that say thousands of citizens protest and testify in Annapolis in the past 90 days- he doesn’t see it going to referendum…
