This week four Democratic candidates have ended their campaigns for the late Elijah Cummings' 7th Congressional District seat. Following the special primary election Tuesday, Delegate Talmadge Branch dropped out of the race Wednesday, and both Michael Higginbotham and Leslie Grant withdrew from the race Thursday.
Higginbotham went on to congratulate special election nominee Kweisi Mfume but said that it was not an endorsement.
Late Thursday, Baltimore and Howard County Delegate Terre Hill withdrew from the race.
Although Hill finished first in Howard County and finished fourth overall in the district, which also includes parts of Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
According to the Maryland State Board of Elections website, there will be 19 Democrats and 6 Republicans on the April 28 primary ballot. The candidates are competing for nominations for a full two year term that would start January 3.
On Tuesday, Mfume won the Democratic nomination by roughly 43%, and Kimberly Klacik won the Republican nomination by about 41%.
Mfume and Klacik will compete in a special general election on April 28, to complete the rest of Cummings' term
