Cyclist Crashes After Pursuit

Thursday at 11:00pm, Cumberland Police Officers on patrol observed a motorcycle operating recklessly in the downtown area with the operator not wearing a helmet. 

Officers attempted to stop the motorcycle; however, the motorcycle fled.  The officers lost sight of the motorcycle and discontinued the traffic stop.  A short time later the same 1988 Suzuki motorcycle was reported wrecked in the intersection of Baltimore Street and Front Street.  The Cumberland Fire Department responded, and the driver, 31-year-old Joshua Vanderhoff of Sugar Notch, PA, was found to have significant injuries and was transported to the hospital.   Driver impairment is believed to be a factor in the crash. 

The Cumberland Police Department’s accident reconstructionist responded to assist with the investigation.   The investigation is continuing, and charges are expected to be filed in this matter. 

The Cumberland Police Department would like to remind the public that when riding a motorcycle to always wearing an approved helmet and to always ride sober.  Besides being the law, every responsible rider needs to keep themselves safe.
