August 29th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

It's a holiday with more than one reason to celebrate. AAA Mid-Atlantic predicts that more than 678,000 Marylanders will travel during the Labor Day holiday weekend, which is a 3 percent increase compared to 2012. The number represents the highest travel volume by Marylanders for the Labor Day holiday weekend from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 since the recession ended in 2009. According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, 56 percent of travelers will be making round-trips between 50 and 400 miles, while 30 percent will be traveling between 701-1,500 miles round-trip.  Ragina  Averella, manager for public and government affairs at AAA Mid-Atlantic, said that economic indicators are looking up from last year, causing Maryland travel to increase. While automobile travel remains the leading choice for Maryland travelers at 87 percent, all modes of transportation are expected to rise.  In addition, Maryland's average cost for gasoline decreased to $3.70 per gallon on July 23. As of Aug. 28, Maryland gasoline is priced at an average of $3.54 per gallon. The price is down 17 cents per gallon since 2012.
