ACPS Adds Two Agricultural Science Electives to High School Programs of Study

February 7th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Public Schools 2020-2021 High School Programs of Study will include two new elective courses – Introduction to Agriculture and Natural Resources and Wildlife and Forest Management. Both are elective semester courses.

Introduction to Agriculture and Natural Resources, available for students in grades 9-12, introduces students to the science of agriculture, plants, animals, and natural resources. Wildlife and Forest Management, also available for students in grades 9-12, introduces students to the biology and relationships among species of wild animals and relationships between forests and other natural resources. Students will also learn to identify different wildlife species and types and species of trees. Discussions will also include hunting and fishing.

The ACPS agriculture model focuses on leadership development, personal growth, and career awareness.  These skills will be developed through classroom and laboratory instruction and student leadership opportunities via the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Organization.

Any student enrolled in at least one agriculture course during the year is eligible to be part of the high school chapter of the FFA Organization, whose primary goal will be to make a positive difference in the lives of the student members by developing their potential in the following areas of leadership, collaboration, personal growth, excellence, and college and career readiness.

“We hope our students will recognize the value in enrolling in the agriculture courses during their high school experience,” remarked ACPS Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Kim Kalbaugh. “These courses will provide students with many opportunities for leadership development and personal growth.  Communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration are emphasized in these courses.” Dr. Kalbaugh continued, “Students who take these courses may not necessarily choose a career in the agriculture field, but they will be able to apply the skills they learn in the courses to any career they are interested in pursuing.”

My God what has happened? The Board of Education has done something to make sense. And there’s no kind of politically correct bulshit involved with it hard to believe I hope this kind of Common Sense will continue.
