ACPS Monitoring Spread of Coronavirus

February 4th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

In coordination with the Allegany County Health Department (ACHD), Allegany County Public Schools (ACPS) continues to monitor the situation surrounding the spread of the coronavirus and any potential impact it may have locally. At this time, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Maryland.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise states and local health departments on health and travel recommendations related to the novel coronavirus. ACPS takes guidance from ACHD. Currently, the CDC guidance relates specifically to those with travel histories to China and/or contact with a known case of novel coronavirus. The CDC has not issued specific guidance for school settings, though health rooms should screen ill students with the same travel related questions.

There is a link on the ACHD website to the latest information published by the CDC about the coronavirus.  Anyone who is concerned about possible exposure to the virus is encouraged to contact the ACHD for further information.  According to the CDC, the risk to the U.S. public is low at this time.

During the winter season, cold and flu viruses are very common.  ACPS and ACHD recommend following the same precautions that are recommended for the prevention of the spread of colds and flu, which includes covering coughs and sneezes, frequent hand washing, and staying home when sick. Additionally, annual influenza vaccination is recommended, especially considering the much higher likelihood to acquire influenza.

The spread of the coronavirus is an evolving situation and will continue to be monitored.  Any change in guidance will be communicated to the ACPS community.
