Additional BoE Hires Would Be Needed To Handle Kirwan Dollars Says Valentine

Maryland lawmakers this week began scrutinizing education legislation that would cost billions of dollars to carry out but supporters say would make the state’s public education system world-class. The legislature’s education and budget committees met jointly for more than six hours to hear public comment on the legislation. The Kirwan Commission’s report called for expanding prekindergarten, increasing salaries for teachers and improving college- and career-ready programs in high schools.  The plan, pushed by legislative Democrats, would cost an additional $4 billion annually within 10 years. The state's portion would reach $2.8 billion, with local governments paying the rest. Republican lawmakers and GOP Gov. Larry Hogan are critical of the legislation because it doesn’t say from where the money should originate. Among the critics, former Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine who served on the Kirwan Commission. He tells WCBC News that under the plan, Kirwan dollars would come to the local school systems- earmarked for specific schools in each district. He says that would require additional hires…

    Didn’t we vote Valentine out of office? Why is he still speaking for the citizens? Shouldn’t one of the commissioners we elected be serving on the Kirwan Commission?

      Yeah, it’s not like Allegany County was booming under Valentine’s tutelage as a commissioner. I wouldn’t exactly call him a critical thinker.
